Not my fave raves by any means but probably a hit. As you would expect it’s zany, wacky, trite pop delivered in Ms Fife’s best brogue. A reyull turreeat! (Record Mirror, 19/01/80)
The Revillos are Fay Fife and Eugene Reynolds of the late, lamented Rezillos, whose taste for splicing together trashy comic-strip sci-fi imagery with hard-hitting rock action deservedly won them a fair following in their short career.
Unfortunately Messrs. Fife and Reynolds were not the actual well-spring of inspiration for the band, as it was John Callis who composed most of their material. “Motor Bike Beat”, written by Fife and Reynolds , attempts to conserve the trashy pizzazz of the old band with mixed results.
As disposable pop it works well enough, whilst the nods to hot-rod and surfing music of the early ’60s grant the number a minor league charm. But the song is nothing more than a slightly more stylized but much less well-produced approximation of Chris Spedding’s “Motorbikin’”.
Conclusion: Fife and Reynolds should zero in on Mike Chapman for future production chores. (NME, 12/01/80)
