The Barracudas – “I Want My Woody Back”

Lotsa sun and silver surfing USA ‘cept someone’s half-inched Jeremy Gluck’s ‘woodie’. No, not his oaken dildo dear, but apparently a wooden car used to transport boards and bints beachwards. sluggish harmonies lead into successful surfing pastiche with great Richman-like talk-over.

‘Cept the whole thing needs an injection of onedoodreedoor ramonarama power to be totally convincing to one such as I. Still, has a certain novelty charm and with airplay could glide gracefully into the salty lower reaches of the Top Ten. (Sounds, 25/08/79)

“London is a lonely town, when you’re the only surfer boys around.”

A different cup of woody altogether. Barracudas’ Anglo/Canuck/N. American amalgam of garbage garage wit and sidewalk surf makes them prime contenders for left field novelty act of the summer. Their B-side, “Subway Surfin’”, displays even greater potential, detailing the joys of riding the breakers on the Central Line. Any group that takes its name from an old Standells song and has Tim Buckley’s cousin on bass is obviously assured of a great future. Aloha! (NME, 25/08/79)
