Goin’ Away

State Of Mind were a popular group playing the usual haunts of school functions, Battle of the Bands and local dances. They enjoyed a loyal following in and around New Castle, Delaware and as their confidence grew so did their skills and writing their own material was inevitable.

Some time in 1966 they impressed James Chavis of Chavis Records and he signed them to his record label which resulted in two singles, both stirring teen beat releases which have become highly prized artifacts for 60s garage collectors.

Their debut disc, “Move” / “If He Comes Back” was released in October 1966. “Move” has an abundance of teen swagger with its Kinks-inspired guitar riff and infectious groove. The flip, “If He Comes Back” is in the folk-rock vein, a mid-paced jangler with loads of appeal.

The record received considerable radio airplay on the local rock / pop station and as a result better paid gigs and support slots followed.

At the back end of 1967 the State Of Mind returned to Virtue Studios and cut their second record, “Goin’ Away” / “Make You Cry”. Both sides were original songs with the moody lament of “Goin’ Away” perhaps having the edge over the uptempo rocker “Make You Cry” on the other side. The latter has a Beatleseque sound with fuzz leads.

Line-up:
Paul Murtagh (rhythm guitar, keyboards and vocals)
Jim Booth (lead guitar and vocals)
Bill Smallbrook (drums)
Bill Sayers (bass / vocals)
