The Chords – “Maybe Tomorrow”

A touch more likeable than “Now It’s Gone”; still pretty metallic and, to this non-mod, a trifle ordinaire. But it has singalong possibilities and some handclaps in its favour. (Record Mirror, 26/01/80)

NME Single Of The Week

In a week of hectic activity on the singles front, the three youth cultures clash head-on as mod, rockabilly and ska battle it out for a place at the top of the pile. What a way to wake up to the ’60s.

There is absolutely nothing to choose between the top three here in terms of performance, The Chords just edge their necks of their Rickenbackers in front by dint of a slightly superior song. Front-man Billy H steps aside for three minutes to allow lead guitarist Chris Pope some elbow room for a bit of his own singing and songwriting.

The result is “Maybe Tomorrow”, the band’s best song live and now arguably the best single to surface from the mod ‘thing’. The solid wall of trebly buzzsaw guitar lies closer to the hearts of Buzzcocks and Undertones than more obvious mentors such as The Who or Jam, although The Chords betray their ’60s roots in the classic key change mid-way through the song.

If this, their second single, is indicative of what the Deptford band are capable of achieving on record, they might just free themselves from the constrictions of mod before the movement finally goes under. (NME, 02/02/80)
