Many people think of art as a kind of religion, a solid anchor to hold on to among the swirling currents of everyday life.

They see the art of the past as monolithic and fixed, and when they are confronted by the quickly changing face of modern painting they jump to the conclusion that it is not art at all, but just a succession of eye-catching, quick-sell fashions or gimmicks.
